Star Community Home
When Catholic Charities' Star Community Home opened its doors two years ago with funding from the Salesforce Foundation, we welcomed 12 homeless single mothers and their children into their new community. A beacon of hope and opportunity for San Francisco’s homeless families, Star Community Home gives them a safe and stable place to live while developing a plan to secure family stability and receiving intensive support to move to permanent housing.
The success of Star Community Home has exceeded every expectation. Investment in our Star families has resulted in truly remarkable returns. Over the past two years, 67 mothers and 84 children have called Star home. Thanks to you, 56 families have already moved into their own permanent housing; and while we celebrate their success, there remains a long list of deserving homeless families still waiting to be served.
Families typically arrive at Star Community Home in crisis: homeless, fearful, hungry, lonely, desperate and penniless. Your donation allows us to immediately offer a safe place to live, provide nutritious meals and begin building the skills necessary for a self-sufficient future. Families exit Star with permanent housing, a stable source of income and the skills they need to leave the streets for good.
San Francisco Chronicle columnist Heather Knight has described Star Community Home as a “successful, creative answer to a perplexing problem” that has been “universally hailed as a model for solving family homelessness.”
More than 85% of homeless families across the nation are headed by single mothers. For these families, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, earning a living wage and maintaining family cohesion represents a difficult balancing act at best, often made impossible when compounded by homelessness. As single women and their children continue to struggle with poverty and homelessness in San Francisco, be part of the solution with a new or recurring tax-deductible donation to the Star Community Home today.
